Blog 3

Since the first time Pip met Estella he thought they were destined to be together, that she was his one true love. This thought was instantly shattered when Pip found out Miss Havisham was not him benefactor. Pip always thought that Miss Havisham would make sure they ended up together. This realization for Pip helped him focus on finding himself and moving on with his life to worry about more important things.

Estella always seemed cold and mean to Pip, by making fun of him and making him cry, but Estella tried to love him. She wanted to since she kissed Pip in the garden. Estella realized that because of the lessons taught to her by Miss. Havisham, she has a cold heart and can never truly love someone. This leads Estella to settle for a loveless marriage only to end up unhappy.

Choose one of the following characters and discuss how her name reveals her personality: Estella

Dickens uses the characteristics of his characters when deciding on their names. When deciding on Estella's name Dickens was not only infulenced on her physical characteristic but was also influenced by her personality. The name Estella derives from the Latin word stella meaning star. The most common connotation of a star is beautiful which is fequently said of Estella. In addition the name Estella sounds regal, and sophisticated. On page 56 Pip describes Estella as beautiful, self-possessed, older, and a queen. Dickens used the desciptions of her to deside on the name of his character. These descriptions all relate to the meaning of Estella and emotions felt when reading the name. Dickens was wise in his choice of the name Estella and the other charaters names aswell.

Growing up Pip has been controled by his sister and most of the adults around him. Joe, his sisters wife, is the one person who he feels comfortable around. The quote given gives us great insight into the character of Pip. This quote shows us that Pip is warm hearted because he stole from his sister in order to help the convict. He knows that if he was caught Mrs. Joe would beat him and he would never be trusted again. This quote also shows that Pip overreacts to things. Pip thinks that because he is going to steal from his sister and Joe he will be sent to the Hulks. Although Pip is a very complex and complicated character this quote gives us a sence of his personality.
