Since the first time Pip met Estella he thought they were destined to be together, that she was his one true love. This thought was instantly shattered when Pip found out Miss Havisham was not him benefactor. Pip always thought that Miss Havisham would make sure they ended up together. This realization for Pip helped him focus on finding himself and moving on with his life to worry about more important things.
Estella always seemed cold and mean to Pip, by making fun of him and making him cry, but Estella tried to love him. She wanted to since she kissed Pip in the garden. Estella realized that because of the lessons taught to her by Miss. Havisham, she has a cold heart and can never truly love someone. This leads Estella to settle for a loveless marriage only to end up unhappy.

I agree with you when you say that Pip's hopes were shattered when he realized that Miss Havisham was not his benefactor. It seems all of his future was hanging by the thread of hope that Miss Havisham was providing for him.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm going to have to disagree with you when you say Estella tried to love Pip the entire time. In the garden, I think Estella had just tried to lead him on, listening to what her guardian had told her to do. I don't think she tried to love Pip until it was too late; when she realized she was the puppet of a brokenhearted old woman. But I do believe that because of Miss Havisham, she settles for a loveless marriage. So for the most part i agree with you.
