Choose one of the following characters and discuss how her name reveals her personality: Estella
Dickens uses the characteristics of his characters when deciding on their names. When deciding on Estella's name Dickens was not only infulenced on her physical characteristic but was also influenced by her personality. The name Estella derives from the Latin word stella meaning star. The most common connotation of a star is beautiful which is fequently said of Estella. In addition the name Estella sounds regal, and sophisticated. On page 56 Pip describes Estella as beautiful, self-possessed, older, and a queen. Dickens used the desciptions of her to deside on the name of his character. These descriptions all relate to the meaning of Estella and emotions felt when reading the name. Dickens was wise in his choice of the name Estella and the other charaters names aswell.

I am affirming your argument; Dickens decides on Estella's name due to her physical characteristics and personality traits. Estella's name comes from the Latin word "stella," meaning star, and she is very stuck-up. For example, she is very rude to Pip and acts snobbishly around him. Her behavior toward him is largely based off of his social class; she knows that he comes from a poor family. Estella's arrogance can be connected to the attitude of movie stars, who are known to be conceited and snobby as well. Movie stars are a type of star, the word from which Estella's name comes; Estella's name accurately reflects her personality.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Christina that Dickens does name his characters by their traits. Mr. Pumblechook is called Pumblechook because he looks like he is choking. Estella comes from the word star, this is because she thinks that she is the best in the world. So this is entirely true.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Christina. Dickens picks Estella's name from the Latin word "stella" which means star. This shows that Estella is thought of as the star or the one that should be shined on. With this thought Estella is looked at as a snobby rich girl who is not very nice to people that she believes is not as good as her. Since Estella comes from the root star she thinks that she must actually live up to that name and act like one to. With this proof Christina correctly connected Estella and her name.
